NOAA’s OCM Conducts San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve LiDAR and Imagery Survey Using UAS

NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management (OCM) with NOAA UAS Program Continues UAS Surveys of National Estuarine Research Reserves (NERR).

NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management (OCM) with NOAA UAS Program Continues UAS Surveys of National Estuarine Research Reserves (NERR).   In September 2017, the team collected Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data and digital imagery using Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) at the San Francisco Bay NERR.  This is the third NERR survey in the past year as part of the NOAA NERR Sites LiDAR project. Using Precision Hawk, the team has acquired and processed UAS LiDAR data over several NERR  with data processing continuing through December 2017.  The UAS NERR Sites project will serve as a basis to evaluate the capability and effectiveness of UAS LiDAR collection and mapping for natural resources management and monitoring.

Specific accomplishments during the most recent survey included:

  • Completion of field collections including GCP surveys, LiDAR checkpoints, 5-band imagery collection and LiDAR collection. (Attached are the coverage for LiDAR and multi-spectral)
  • A total of 380,000 multi-spectral images were collected.
  • Data sets will be available in December 2017.
